Eagle Transit Buses Semi Truck Parts & Accessories

Semi Truck Parts & Accessories

U.S. Continental Trailways ordered the first Eagle intercity bus (coach) prototype at the German Karl Kassbohrer coach-building plant in 1956. The luxury model that was later named the Golden Eagle was based on the Henschel undercarriage, powered by turbodiesel V8 MAN engines good for 230 hp coupled with a 6-speed ZF transmission, featured a stylish streamlined bodywork, and was packed with all of the latest high-end accessories and parts. In the next two years, there were only 51 Golden Eagles built. In 1958, the production of less luxurious Silver Eagle coaches equipped with Rolls Royce underfloor engines commenced. Later, Eagle transit buses were used as standard coaches for the Trailways fleet.

Continental was forced to start looking for another manufacturer for the Eagle Bus since Kassbohrer decided to focus more on the European market. With the help of a new partner, La Brugeoise, Trailways opened their own manufacturing facility in Belgium where the production of the Silver Eagle dubbed Model 01 continued with minor changes in exterior design and the addition of a new signature mesh grille. The first Model 05 rolled off the assembly line in 1968. On the early stages of production, it received very few changes if compared to its predecessor. Later versions had a boxier appearance, new marker lights, and square bumpers. Most of the time, the Model 05 featured Detroit Diesel motors.

Due to financial problems, the plant was sold to MOL, another Belgian heavy machinery manufacturer. The company continued to produce Model 05 coaches for European customers for several years. In the early 1970s, because of high labor costs in Europe, the owners decided to relocate production facilities to the U.S. In 1974, the new Eagle Coach Corporation was established. The factory in Brownsville, Texas had built the Model 05 until it was superseded with the new Model 10 powered by a fuel-efficient turbocharged Detroit Diesel 6V-92TA engine in 1980. The vehicle featured an aerospace-style instrument panel and taller windows. Five years later, the wider Model 15 and its narrow version, called the Model 20, were introduced.

The production continued until 1998 when the company filed for bankruptcy. Overall, around 8,000 Eagle Bus coaches were manufactured. For more than thirty years, they remained the trademark of Continental Trailways.
