Stewart & Stevenson is an old American manufacturer started in Houston far back in 1902. Currently, it's a division of Kirby Corporation which acquired the company in 2017. They were equipped with reliable diesel engines, namely a Caterpillar 3116 rated at 225 or 290 hp and a Caterpillar 3126 making 330 hp. The powerplants were mated to a 7-speed automatic gearbox by Allison. After 2006, these LMTVs were modernized and produced by other companies. These days, the decommissioned machines can be found on the market, and their application can be rather unusual. For instance, the M1079 can be modified for active recreation.

Using this truck in such a way has its own pros and cons. On the one hand, you get sufficient space for your family and serious off-road capabilities. Also, the machine can be way less expensive than a traditional recreational vehicle. On the other hand, it is rough and heavy enough. According to military terminology, the word “light” here actually implies a curb weight of 20-25 thousands of pounds, depending on the model. The payload can be 5,000-10,000 lb or even more.
