Mechanical fuel pumps were the standard in cars with carbureted engines till the 1970s, when engines evolved from carburetors to fuel injection. Electric fuel pumps replaced mechanical ones and became the norm because the fuel injection system requires higher pressure than mechanical pumps can generate.
