      Brake Pads

Life is all about putting in great performances whatever you’re doing. With the help of TRW brake pads you can deliver great performances for your customer. TRW Aftermarket brake pads are the best in the business, offering high quality, reliable performance that you can trust whenever you need it. They are the market-leading specialists when it comes to braking systems, so take advantage of experience. They will make sure you’re offering the best service, and that your customers’ vehicle safety systems perform to their best on the road every time.

Improved brake pad performance with COTEC

TRW developers have come up with a way for you to get the very best from front or rear brake pad replacement. It’s called COTEC.

This advanced silicate coating is applied to the friction material of replacement brake pads, resulting in an improved contact between the brake disc and pad.

TRW COTEC brake pads can stop vehicles up to seven metres quicker than other premium brake pads during the first few stops following a pad change (known as the bedding-in period). This innovative technology means that they out-perform all major competitors during the bedding-in period of the pad, when the friction co-efficient is lower than usual.

Because it improves safety from the moment the driver leaves the garage, they have made the decision to coat most of brake pads with COTEC. Over 90% of the brake pads that TRW sells in Europe, have already been COTEC coated.

      DTEC enhances COTEC

In addition to COTEC, TRW developed DTEC, a premium quality, ceramic formulation low dust brake pad with all the safety benefits of main COTEC-coated range plus low-dust technology to reduce rim surface dust levels by up to 45%.So you can now offer added value for your customers with DTEC brake pads for cleaner wheels.

      A leader in braking

As a leader among braking system providers, TRW prides themselves on delivering the very highest standards across all of car brake pads. They do this by ensuring:

      • Total control
      • 100% own production of brake pads means TRW can guarantee quality parts that meet our rigorous standards
      • Unique and thorough manufacturing processes
      • TRW designs and manufactures the entire brake system. This is at the heart of what they do.

      DTEC Brake Pads

You can now offer added value for your customers with TRW Aftermarket DTEC brake pads. DTEC is a premium quality, low dust brake pad with all the safety benefits of main COTEC-coated range plus low dust technology to reduce rim surface dust levels on wheels by up to 45%.

      Safety that shines

      • Low dust formulation for cleaner wheels
      • No compromise on safety performance

TRW rear and front brake pads offer more safety, wider coverage and easier fitting. TRW new COTEC friction coating can cut the stopping distances on new brake pads by up to 7 metres – so they are making it standard – and DTEC adds low dust to its safety performance. Plus, they will give you all the fitting accessories you need to fit fast, and 98% coverage, so you can serve almost any vehicle.

      What is COTEC?

COTEC is a new friction coating developed by TRW that significantly improves safety after a brake pad replacement. The bedding-in process for brake pads normally begins with what’s called a ‘green behaviour’ period, when the friction co-efficient is lower than usual. Drivers can find it difficult to adjust to the difference in performance during these first stops. That’s why they developed COTEC, to enhance the safety of brake pads even further. COTEC-coated brake pads cut stopping distances by improving the contact between the brake pad and disc, and the results outperform both major competitors and original equipment.

      Brake pads with added value

But they didn’t stop there. They took COTEC one step further and developed DTEC, which reduce rim surface dust levels significantly to give all the safety benefits of COTEC plus cleaner wheels, too.

      Complete coverage

Because it improves safety from the moment the driver leaves the garage, they have made the decision to coat most of brake pads with COTEC. Over 90% of the brake pads that TRW sells in Europe, have already been COTEC coated.

      Faster fitting of brake parts

      • Exceptional coverage for almost any vehicle
      • Each pad comes with fitting accessories and warranty

All this product innovation and enhanced safety is matched with great service quality, too. They will give you all the fitting accessories required to achieve a fast fit, and 31,068-mile (50,000km) warranty will give you peace of mind and add value to your business.

The technology behind brake pads and discs

The back plate of the brake pad – backed itself by the noise prevention shim – is made from high quality steel and powder coated to reduce the development of rust. This robust plate is then bonded to the friction material with a unique adhesive compound that can withstand extremely high temperatures and shear strengths. And the scorched plate layer that follows is given an innovative surface coating that ensures optimised friction coefficient right from the first stop.

Brake pads that meet the standard

All brake pads meet the strict ECE R90 specifications that other aftermarket brands have to meet. But for TRW the testing doesn’t end there. They go further, adding shear strength testing during production control to ensure that the pad stays effective at any time. In short, TRW Aftermarket brake pads are tested to the extreme, both in the lab during production and on the road, just like original equipment pads, to meet industry standards. Then they test them harder, so that they meet standards.

      Scorching

Another way that they reduce the bedding-in time on replacement brake pads to a minimum is by applying an advanced plate scorching process to original equipment standards. They heat the brake pad material to 600-700°C by pressing the friction material onto a heated plate. This heats the matrix of the friction material, allowing carbonization to occur to the first 0.5 to 1.5mm of its surface. This advanced scorching allows the evacuation of gases and resins, which are trapped inside the friction material at the mixing stage – and it’s much more effective than conventional brake pad scorching techniques.

Not all aftermarket suppliers scorch their plates to this advanced level – and some don’t even carry out the process at all. So, with TRW you can supply brake pads that offer both maximum safety and a more environmental product.

      Friction material

The friction material is the most important part of the brake pad. That’s why they innovate, develop and manufacture so many components in-house, to make sure they can go on giving you the best possible quality.

The ingredients of material ensure a stable friction coefficient. They also ensure the safest braking performance in all temperatures, at all speeds and under all conditions. To achieve this, all brake pads contain the optimum mix of raw materials from rubber to graphite.

Less noise with TRW brake discs and pads

They work hard to eliminate noise and so TRW brake pads are fitted with high quality shims that act as a damper between the friction material and the brake caliper. And they use the same metal shim, held in place with special adhesive, that’s used in original equipment. TRW friction components are not only tested in NVH (noise vibration harshness) laboratories but also on the road – and they keep pushing the technology further. They are now using a fibre glass material instead of rubber for the shims of aftermarket brake pads. They even produce integrally moulded shims and a multi-layer construction for the maximum noise reduction in new brake pads.

Give your customers excellent service from a brake rotor range that offers premium quality and increasingly wide coverage, all backed by more than 100 years of TRW experience.

      Our brake rotors give you:

      • 98% coverage of the European vehicle parc
      • Brake rotors that exceed OE specifications

12 million reasons to trust TRW brake rotors

TRW produces over 12 million brake rotors every year, both for original equipment and the independent aftermarket worldwide, so you can put your trust in the market leaders. And because they are always at the forefront of innovation, you’ll get the very latest new developments in brake rotor technology that make sure you can give better service to more customers.

      Black Painted Brake Rotors

TRW original equipment is never just a copy of an existing model – it’s designed and built from the ground up to meet the real world challenges your customers face every day. To provide increased corrosion resistance and performance, product development division has created an industry first – Black Painted Brake Rotors.

By coating parts of the rotor in a special black paint, a unique surface is created that adds a protective barrier against corrosion. The paint has been specifically developed by TRW’s original equipment business and provides a gloss finish to the rotor (and for the discerning motorist, it looks good, too).

They like to ensure that installers do a great job for customers by helping them to fit fast. That’s another benefit of our Black Painted range. These brake rotors are packed in a VCI paper, which is moisture inhibiting. That means they don’t need to coat the discs in oil or rust preventative that has to be cleaned off before fitting. You just take them out of the box and get to work, which saves both time and money.

This innovation is based on the latest insights, discovered through the direct research and development relationships that TRW maintains with major vehicle manufacturers around the world, so that our customers can give added value to theirs.

      High Carbon Rotors

Because they are designed not just to meet standards but also to be the best real world solution, High Carbon Rotors can exceed manufacturer specifications. They provide improved thermal behaviour, great stability and best performance.

High Carbon Rotors help meet the ever increasing demands on brake rotors in terms of weight, braking performance and NVH (noise vibration harshness) properties. With more vehicle manufacturers introducing High Carbon discs as standard, they are making sure you can rely on strong coverage from our aftermarket range.

      Here’s why:

      • Rotors produced with High Carbon have optimal thermal conductivity, allowing the rotors to run cooler and, as a result, ensure more consistent brake performance
      • A High Carbon brake rotor is less likely to distort, which means less performance-related problems
      • High Carbon improves the thermal behaviour of the rotors, giving better stability and increased resistance to distortion and thermal cracking
      • High Carbon rotors also help to provide a noise and judder-free performance

      Tighter tolerances on brake rotors

When they design Original Equipment, they control every detail of every part, and they don’t compromise on raw materials, or on machining tolerances. All castings are made of top-quality GG20 material or GG15HC for High Carbon. And they keep tight control on three other machining tolerances: the DTV (Disc Thickness Variation) never exceeds 12 µm; the Run Out never exceeds 30 µm; and the central hole is fixed at H8 norm. That means hassle free fitment and comfortable performance without surprises.

Disc brakes with cast iron safety

Because they are committed to producing the safest and highest quality brake rotors, a carefully controlled mixture of raw materials is used to produce the finest grey cast iron. Machining process quality isn’t enough – it has to be the best possible mix from the initial casting for the best end performance quality.

      Exhaustive tests ensure:

      • High carbon content (the fluidity allows easier casting and machining, plus a low degree of shrinkage)
      • Low melting temperature (1140°C- 1200°C)
      • High wear resistance
      • High thermal capacity
      • High tensile and compressive strength, giving high levels of rigidity

The castings then undertake a variety of stringent tests and controls before being released for machining to ensure the highest levels of safety.

Enhanced safety with bearings and the ABS sensor ring

They also offer a range of brake rotors with integrated bearings, ABS sensor rings and fixing accessories. This makes life much easier when it comes to fitting, as these critical safety components are often damaged when replacing the rotor. Using an old, worn or damaged bearing can also increase the risk of damage to the rotor itself. TRW’s brake rotors with mounted wheel bearings are assembled to ensure the correct pressing in of the bearing. They will deliver both toothed and magnetic ABS sensor rings, depending on what is required.

All-round safety for TRW brake pads and rotors

Because they produce not just rotors and brake pads but every type of vehicle safety solution, no one knows better than they do how components work together to maximize the power of the braking system and protect the passengers inside the vehicle. They design and build rotors to be a balanced part of the braking system. That’s why TRW brake rotors and pads mean the most efficient fit for you, best quality for your customer, and the best results for your business.

A few tips on brake shoes

They know that you know your job and do it well, but it’s always good to share the fundamentals of best practice. Here are a few fitting tips when you’re working with brake shoes.

Size matters. Before fitting new TRW Aftermarket Brake Shoes, always carefully measure the maximum diameter of the brake drum you’re working on. This will be marked on the brake drum itself. Never use drums if they are close to, or over, the maximum diameter.

Under 2mm is too little. For safety and balance, if you find that any one brake shoe is worn below the 2mm mark then it’s definitely time to fit a complete new axle set.

Backplate inspection. You will find that some drum brake systems feature an inspection hole in the backplate. This is useful, because it enables you to see whether the brake linings are worn without wasting time removing the brake drum.
