Cloyes® B314 - Balance Shaft Belt

The crankshaft drives the valvetrain and balance shafts, on engines so equipped, via timing belts or chains. Belt and chain timing must be precise to ensure the valves open and close at the right time, for optimum engine performance, and the balance shaft weights are in the correct position, to eliminate engine vibration. However, worn belts/chains and sprockets can cause timing to go astray. A stretched or worn engine timing belt/chain can jump one or more sprocket teeth, causing the engine to not start or run poorly. On an interference engine, improper valvetrain timing could result in contact between pistons and valves, and severe engine damage. A stretched or worn balance shaft belt/chain could cause incorrect balance shaft timing resulting in severe vibration.
