The history of the Dodge brand dates back to the early 1900s when the Dodge brothers, John Francis and Horace Elgin, opened their machine shop to produce parts for Detroit-based automotive manufacturers. After moving to Detroit, they started making their own automobiles under the “Dodge Brothers” brand. Their first models were based on the Ford Model T but offered many improvements, including better ignition, enhanced engine design, reliability, and ruggedness. The commercial success was ensured by easy, smooth start thanks to an electrical starter motor, while their competition still used dull crank start. In 1917, Dodge opened its truck division.

The US military used Dodge trucks during WWI. After the war was over, these vehicles were widely used for commercial purposes. In 1925, after both Dodge brothers died, the company was acquired by Dillon, Read & Co for $146 million, the largest sum paid in history at the time. Three years later, Dodge was passed through to the Chrysler corporation. During WWII, the U.S. army extensively used the Dodge WC54 4x4 light truck. The vehicle served as the main ambulance. Then the model has evolved into the famous WC series – a line of 4WD and 6WD military trucks largely used by the US, Canadian, and various European armed forces.

In the 1960s, the Dodge 50 series become a favorite vehicle for utility and military operations in the UK. In 1977, after the collapse of Chrysler's European division, the Dodge brand along with the factory was purchased by Renault. The new owner continued to manufacture Dodge commercial vehicles. In recent years, the Dodge brand changed owners several times. In 1998, Chrysler Corporation united with Daimler-Benz AG, forming short-lived DaimlerChrysler. Dodge became the company’s performance division, also offering some low-priced models. In 2007, the Chrysler Group subsidiary was sold to an investment firm, and because of the financial crisis, both GM and Chrysler filed for bankruptcy on May 1, 2009. Later, after forming a partnership with Italian automaker Fiat and gathering support from the US Government, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles US LLC was created which is now one of the “Big Three” American automotive manufacturers.

Dodge is known for producing a line of heavy-duty trucks, buses, and motorhomes based on the Dodge M-Series chassis in the 1960s and 1970s. At the time, the company was a leader in using computerized engineering methods offering a range of heavy-duty trucks of C, D, and L series. The letter “T” was added in case of tandem rear wheels. The L-series, such as the LN1000, was offered with tilt cabs. Sleeper and non-sleeper variants were available. The truck had a 50-degree turning angle. Crucial components were galvanized, and the powertrain was easy to reach. The D-series is a heavy-duty version of the standard Dodge pickup truck. From 1960 to 1976, Dodge produced a line of medium- (500 – 700-series) and heavy-duty (800 – 1000-series) trucks dubbed the Dodge LCF (Low Cab Forward). These trucks are powered by a V8 gasoline or I6 diesel engine. One of the main advantages of the Dodge LCF is accessibility. The hood is designed to swing open along with fenders so that the mechanic could stand between the front wheel and the engine when working. In 1975, Dodge decided to pull out from the heavy-duty truck market.
