Hitachi® PRS0002 - Manifold Absolute Pressure Sensor

A Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) sensor measures vacuum or pressure in the intake manifold. On a normally aspirated engine vacuum is high at idle and almost zero at wide open throttle. On engines with speed density electronic fuel injection systems that do not use a Mass Air Flow sensor, the MAP sensor signal, along with information from the air and coolant temperature sensors, throttle position sensor, and engine RPM, are used to calculate the intake airflow. Though this part is constructed to be durable, it can fail due to moisture contamination or physical wear. A malfunctioning MAP sensor can't report correct data to the ECU (engine control unit) and can make the engine run rich or lean, resulting in excessive fuel consumption, increased emissions, rough idle, detonation, etc.
