The history of the Isuzu brand dates back to 1918, when Tokyo gas and electric company in cooperation with shipbuilding establishment decided to take their business further into automotive manufacturing. Isuzu predecessors built the first-ever truck in Japan in 1919. The company and its products were named “Isuzu” after the Isuzu river. The name translates into English as “fifty bells.” In 1934, Isuzu engineers designed and produced the first-ever air-cooled diesel engine in Japan. A year later, the first Japanese bus prototype appeared, equipped with the engine mounted under the floor and air brakes. Since 1955, Japan’s Antarctic Observation Base has been using Isuzu diesel engines and snow tractors. Isuzu equipment proved to be very efficient and reliable even in extreme cold.

Four years later, the company developed the world's first 2-ton light-duty cabover truck that became the basis for the modern N-Series trucks. The company’s success attracted investors, namely General Motors. The cooperation between manufacturers opened the U.S. market for the Japanese brand, and after forming Isuzu Commercial Truck of America, Inc., Isuzu KS22 low cab forward trucks were presented to U.S. customers. These trucks became very popular thanks to their durability and low cost of ownership. Two years later, Isuzu trucks became the best-selling imported commercial trucks in the U.S. and still hold this position today with more than half a million Isuzu trucks sold in North America.

The range of aforementioned N-Series trucks or the Isuzu Elf was originally offered only in Asia. The first generation of this medium-duty truck went into production in August 1959. The vehicle was powered by a 1.5-liter GL150 gasoline engine that was replaced with a 2.0-liter gasoline motor in 1960, the first in its class in Japan. The sixth generation of the Isuzu N-Series/Elf was introduced in 2006. The model is available in High Cab, Wide Cab, and Regular Cab variants. The heavier version of the N-Series, the F-Series or Isuzu Forward was produced starting in 1970. This line of medium-duty trucks is mostly equipped with diesel engines coupled with manual or semiautomatic transmissions. The model is offered in 2WD or 4WD configurations. The Isuzu H-Series was introduced in 2003. It is a rebadged variant of the Chevy Kodiak / GMC TopKick powered by a 7.8-liter I6. The model was intended to be used majorly as a vocational truck. Since 2011, the company has been offering the Isuzu Reach, a walk-through van based on an Isuzu NPR ladder chassis. The model is powered by a 3.0-liter 4JJ1-TC turbodiesel I4 mated to a 6-speed Aisin automatic transmission. A full walk-through body can be equipped with either a roll-up or swing-out rear doors. Both FedEx and UPS utilize the Isuzu Reach in city delivery operations.
