Man SE is a subsidiary of Volkswagen AG with headquarters in Munich. The company is one of the European leaders in designing and manufacturing heavy-duty trucks, buses, other commercial vehicles, diesel engines, and turbines for various applications. The origins of the company can be traced back to 1758 when the first ironworks became operational in Oberhausen, Germany. Fifty years later, after merging with several other ironworks, the Gute trading company was formed. Besides ore mining and iron production, the company’s engineers continued developing new mechanisms and techniques, which brought many contracts for the construction of bridges, railroads, printing machines, and so on.
After the merger between two major machine works companies located in two neighboring cities in Germany in 1898, the United Machine Works Augsburg and Nuremberg Ltd. (M.A.N.) was formed. The first ever diesel motor was invented in the company’s laboratory by Rudolf Diesel. After WWI, the series of acquisitions and mergers followed, including the take over by Gute. MAN became a nationwide enterprise with tens of thousands of employees. MAN tractors were in high demand at the time. Starting in 1915, MAN produced lightweight driveshaft commercial vehicles and chain-driven heavy-duty trucks. In 1924, MAN introduced the world’s first vehicle powered by a diesel engine with fuel injection.
In the 1930s, MAN produced the world’s most powerful (up to 150 hp) diesel trucks and buses with three axles. At this period, the company started implementing assembly line production and introduced turbocharging technology. During WWII, the production was mainly focused on diesel engines for military needs. Almost all MAN manufacturing facilities were completely destroyed during massive Allied air raids. After the war, the production was renewed. The company came back on its feet producing tractors and equipment for agriculture. In 1967, MAN started collaborating with Saviem, a French truck manufacturer. As a result, the MAN F8 cab over engine truck was created. The vehicle featured the revolutionary, ergonomically designed day or sleeper cab.
With the acquisition of Büssing in 1971, the company adopted its signature lion for MAN’s logo. In cooperation with Saviem and Volkswagen, MAN developed a range of lightweight trucks. For example, in the period from 1979 to 1993, more than 72,000 light-duty trucks based on the Volkswagen LT body were sold. The company continued expansion and entered the international market in the early 1980s. The sales started in South Africa, the Middle East, Turkey, China, Russia, and the United States. At the turn of the century, MAN introduced the new TG-Series of heavy-duty trucks setting new standards in the industry for decades to come.
Today, MAN offers a range of commercial vehicles that includes the MAN TGE cargo van, the light-duty MAN TGL, the versatile MAN TGM, and the heavy-duty MAN TGS. Also, the company offers passenger vans, city and intercity buses, and premium-class coaches under the NEOPLAN badge. Besides the variety of high-quality commercial and specialized extremely heavy-duty vehicles, MAN offers the range of efficient diesel and gas engines capable of producing up to 2000 hp, high-performance axles and transfer cases, as well as an extensive variety of original accessories and parts for vans, trucks, buses, agricultural machinery, locomotives, boats, yachts, and so on.
