Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft was the company which introduced the first-ever truck to the world back in 1896. It was the creation of Gottlieb Daimler, while around the same time, Carl Benz was focused on buses and vehicles which would be classified as vans. The company’s early panel vans had a 1,760 lb to 5,500 lb payload capacity and featured an engine-over-front-axle construction, a raised hood, and a 4-speed transmission. In the early 1900s, the manufacture of these vans was conducted in Marienfelde, Berlin and later on in Untertürkheim, Stuttgart, with models produced in the latter facility having “U” in their names. At the time, there wasn’t a distinct differentiation between trucks and vans. In 1923, the first diesel trucks rolled off the assembly lines in Stuttgart. 1926 was a remarkable year for both the manufacturer itself and its range of utility vehicles. It marks the merger of Daimler and Benz and the official start of the Mercedes-Benz truck lineup, with 3 models unveiled at the 1926 Berlin Motor Show. One year later, they built a long-wheelbase commercial vehicle called the L ¾, used as an ambulance or delivery truck.

The company’s truck range had been growing until 1944, while the 1950s were even more fruitful. The Mercedes-Benz L6600, the brand’s biggest truck built after WWII, was introduced and gained in popularity during those years. The success on the utility vehicle market continued in 1951 with the launch of the Unimog AWD tractor and the first bus. Merc’s first semi-integral bus, dubbed the O321 H, appeared in 1954. With its coil springs and an engine installed at the rear, it was a breakthrough. 1973 brought the NG medium- and heavy-duty model portfolio. In 1989, it was superseded by the SK which is still on duty in many parts of the world. Another great expansion of the Mercedes truck range occurred in 1990 when three hugely popular rigs saw the world, namely the Atego, Axor, and Actros. One of the latest HD trucks introduced to the construction sector is the Mercedes-Benz Arocs, offered in a wide selection of engines, cab styles, and axle and wheel configurations.

Daimler trucks have always been at the forefront of innovative technology. Case in point, the Mercedes-Benz Actros comes with Highway Pilot Connect, which is the first semi-autonomous platooning system ever used in the world. It utilizes about 400 sensors to monitor the environment and take over in some situations, driving the rig autonomously without the operator’s input. In 2016, Mercedes debuted the world’s first fully-electric semi truck called the Urban eTruck, with a payload of 29 tons and a driving range of 125 miles. Two years later, after rigorous testing, the first ten of eActros all-electric rigs were officially put into service.
