The Fuso brand name was first used for a commercial bus produced by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) in 1932. Fuso was an ancient Chinese name for Japan, and also refers to the Hibiscus plant. Over the next several decades, the Fuso name would be applied to a series of trucks and buses, the first Canter being introduced in 1963. Eventually the name Fuso was integrated into the official brand name, Mitsubishi Fuso. In 1970, MHI entered into a joint venture with the Chrysler Corporation that was called Mitsubishi Motors Corporation (MMC). MMC and Mitsubishi Corporation established Mitsubishi Truck of America in 1985, and the following year the company sold its first commercial trucks in North America. The MMC/Chrysler joint venture was dissolved in 1993. In 2003, MMC partnered with Daimler, forming Mitsubishi Fuso Truck and Bus Corporation, which eventually became part of the Daimler Truck division of Daimler AG.

The Canter is the company’s all time best-selling vehicle for good reasons. The equine-inspired name is derived from the original design’s lively performance, which reminded one of a swift horse. This truck is built rugged through and through to handle the weight, yet it’s as easy to drive as a lightweight.
