Oxygen sensors are a vital component of the vehicle's emission system. One end of the primary oxygen sensor detects the oxygen levels in the exhaust flow, while the other end connects to the wiring that gives all the information to the computer. The computer then uses the sensor readings to determine if the air/fuel mixture is rich or lean and adjusts the amount of fuel entering the engine accordingly. There is also a secondary oxygen sensor that is used to check the efficiency of the catalytic converter. If the oxygen sensor fails, the computer can no longer sense the air/fuel ratio, leading to poor vehicle performance.
