Most pickups carry their spare tire under the bed, tucked away and out of sight. Accessing the spare involves turning the windlass that holds it up in small circles hundreds of times, often while lying in the dirt or mud or snow. And then doing it all again to put the flat away. Off-roading is tough on tires, so you’ll probably need your spare a lot more often than when driving on the street. Oh, by the way: those oversized tires won’t fit under there at all. Mount your spare (or spares) in the bed where they’ll fit, and where they’re easy to access. As a bonus, you’ll move a lot of weight several feet forward, improving handling and traction.
