The alternator consists of an aluminum case housing a set of stationary electrical windings called the stator. Inside the stator, another set of windings around an iron core comprise the rotor, which is mounted on a shaft that is turned by the belt and pulley. The shaft is supported by bearings at the front and rear of the housing. A set of brushes maintains electrical contact, and a rectifier assembly houses the diodes that convert the alternating current produced by the alternator to the direct current used by the battery and electrical system. A voltage regulator, which controls the amount of voltage in the system, may be a part of the alternator.

Symptoms of charging system problems include the dash warning light illuminating, dim lights and malfunctions with other electrical accessories. When the alternator fails completely, the vehicle has to run on battery power alone until it discharges to the point the vehicle stops running.
