The power steering pump and fluid reservoir may be one unit or the fluid reservoir may be separate and connect to the pump with a hose. Leaks are an obvious cause for pump replacement. A power steering leak can make a mess of the engine bay, and if not repaired can result in loss of power assist. Power steering fluid can also become flammable when sprayed under pressure onto a hot exhaust manifold. A lack of power assist may not necessarily mean the pump is at fault. Steering effort and fluid pressure tests should be performed and all components in the power steering system inspected before the pump is condemned.
