Peterbilt is a leader in the medium and heavy-duty truck industry, with a reputation for unsurpassed quality, cutting edge design, and innovative engineering. But it is the company’s dedication to the customer that has made them a legend in the business. From the very beginning, company founder T.A. Peterman stressed quality construction over quantity production, and making trucks to the customer’s specifications. This commitment to the customer has not only made Peterbilts sought after by truck owners, but the preferred choice of truck drivers as well. In fact, fleet owners have even been known to purchase Peterbilts as a means to attract highly qualified drivers.

The concept of custom building came naturally to T.A. Peterman - he became a truck manufacturer by necessity trying to meet the needs of his original business. Peterman was a plywood manufacturer and lumberman who was having difficulty getting logs from the forest to his lumber mill. The traditional methods of the day – floating logs down river or hauling them with horse or steam tractors - were inefficient. He thought that trucks could do a better job, but after not finding any on the market that suited his purpose, he decided to construct his own. Peterman started by rebuilding and modifying surplus army trucks, but then in 1938 he purchased the assets of Fageol Motors, a manufacturer of buses, trucks, and farm tractors that had failed during the depression. With this as a foundation, the first Peterbilt trucks were built in 1939, the dual-drive Model 334 and the chain-drive Model 260, both with the distinctive styling that would become a hallmark of Peterbilt trucks.

Although production was slow at first, just 14 trucks were built that first year and 82 the following year, Peterbilt trucks quickly became known for their quality and grew to be popular throughout the trucking industry. Part of this success was because Peterbilt engineers spent a lot of time in the field finding out what truck users wanted before designing a truck. Peterbilt manufactured heavy-duty trucks for the war effort and the company gained valuable knowledge through this experience that positioned them to successfully resume commercial business when the war ended. Unfortunately, T.A. Peterman died in 1945 and his widow, Ida, sold the physical assets, but not the land, to seven company managers.

The company continued to grow through the late 1940s and early 1950s, releasing the popular and classic Model 350 and the Model 351, which would have the longest production run of any truck in company history, the last one rolling off the line in 1976. 1953 saw the creation of the red Peterbilt oval, one of the most recognized brand logos in the world. In 1958, Ida Peterman decided to sell her land. Rather than build a new plant, the company owners decided to sell Peterbilt to Pacific Car and Foundry (PACCAR), who already owned Kenworth and were seeking to expand their presence in truck manufacturing. As a part of PACCAR, the Peterbilt success story continued with the release of trucks like the classic Model 359 in 1967, the sloped-hood Model 348 in 1970, the aerodynamic, cab-over Model 362 in 1981, and the legendary Model 379 in 1986, the most popular owner-operator truck in history.

In recent years Peterbilt has expanded into the medium-duty market with the Models 325, 330, 337, and 348, trucks that are ideal for delivery and utility use, and as tankers, plows, wreckers, and many other applications. The low cab forward Model 320 is the favorite of the refuse industry, and workhorses like the Model 365 and Model 367 are mainstays in the construction business. Over the road tractors like the Models 579 and 587 are setting new standards in aerodynamics, efficiency, durability and comfort, and come with innovations like APEX, which integrates the powertrain for improved fuel economy and shifting efficiency, and the Driver Performance Assistant, which helps the driver achieve increased fuel efficiency while reducing component wear. The standard PACCAR in-line 6-cylinder diesel engines are responsive at low RPMs and optimized for fuel efficiency, while meeting all EPA emissions requirements, and select models are available with Cummins diesel engines.
