According to the US trailer lighting requirements, all trailers that are longer than 6' must be equipped with front and rear side marker lights, as well as every trailer that is 80" wide or wider requires front and rear clearance lights to be installed in addition to the basic set of lights. Trailer clearance and marker lights play a great role in the overall visibility of your vehicle, making it easier for other drivers to see your trailer at night and in bad weather conditions. Both of them are available in an array of models on our website, so you're sure to find the right ones for your trailer.
Depending on the length of a trailer, it can feature from one to three or even more marker lights on each side. They usually work in tandem with reflectors, which increase the visibility of a trailer in poor weather. If your trailer is equipped with just one marker light on each side from the factory, it is mounted as far toward the rear of the trailer as possible. Mid-length trailers also have similar marker lights in the front, which do the same job as their rear counterparts. Just like rear marker lights, they are located as far toward the front as possible.
If your trailer is longer than 30', it must be equipped with intermediate side marker lights in addition to front and rear ones. They serve the same purpose as the other two and are designed to maximize your trailer's visibility. As a rule, intermediate side marker lights are mounted as close to the center line of the trailer as possible. In many cases, they are also accompanied by side marker reflectors which make the trailer even more visible to other road users. Their functions are frequently combined into a single unit for ease of installation and maintenance.
Trailers towed by semi trucks are usually huge as they are designed to carry tons of stuff. They are very long and wide, which is why they require additional lights to be installed to make them noticeable in low-visibility conditions. Some of them are front and rear clearance lights which can be found on all trailers wider than 80". Front and rear clearance lights are installed as high as possible, yet on the same height above the ground and at the same distance from the vertical centerline of the trailer. Such location on the trailer enhances its visibility, and therefore increases your safety.
Not all trailer clearance and marker lights are alike. They are available in an array of designs to fit different applications. There are factory replacements and aftermarket lights built to enhance the look and visibility of the trailer. The newest of them come with LED bulbs that provide a superior light output and longevity, while being extremely energy efficient. These lights are super bright which makes them visible for a long distance in any weather conditions. Plus, LED trailer clearance and marker lights run cooler than their halogen counterparts, which is why they allow for using smaller and more compact housings.
