An internal wastegate has the wastegate valve that is built into the turbine housing and controlled by an actuator which consists of a spring and sealed chamber connected to a pressure only source (normally on the compressor cover of the turbocharger,) and that means that whatever the pressure is within the pressure side of the turbocharger compressor, the sealed chamber is also at the same pressure. External or internal, a wastegate is a boost-controlling device, which functions by limiting exhaust gases going through the turbocharger therefore controlling the maximum boost pressure produced by the turbocharger. In its resting position, a wastegate is shut, and as the boost pressure builds, force is applied to the actuator. When the boost pressure exceeds the spring value, the actuator progressively opens the wastegate, bypassing some of the exhaust gases therefore maintaining the boost pressure at the desired level. To put it simply – a wastegate prevents the boost pressure from climbing indefinitely and consequently blowing the engine.
