Volvo Truck’s core values are quality, safety, and environmental care. Quality is built into every truck in ISO 9001 certified plants where every step of design and production of the engine, chassis, and cab is carefully controlled throughout the manufacturing process. Safety is in Volvo’s DNA, and numerous safety features are incorporated into every truck – they were the first with 3-point seat belts, the first with air bags as standard equipment, and the first with standard anti-lock brakes. Volvo takes their environmental responsibility seriously, building diesel-powered trucks that are the cleanest and most fuel efficient on the road, in energy-efficient plants certified to international ISO 50001 energy-management standards, and platinum-level certified to the U.S. Department of Energy’s Superior Energy Performance Standard.

Today, in addition to Mack Trucks, Renault Trucks, and UD Trucks, Volvo Trucks are part of the Volvo Group, the 2nd largest heavy-duty truck manufacturer in the world. Although Volvo built its first truck in Sweden in 1928, the company can draw on many years of truck building experience gained on both sides of the Atlantic. The company sold their first truck in North America in 1959, but didn’t become firmly established in this market until the mid-1970s. In 1981, Volvo purchased the assets of the White Motor Company, which included White Trucks as well as the Autocar brand. With this acquisition, Volvo not only gained a marketing and distribution network for its own trucks, but obtained an existing line of trucks designed for the American market, including the conventional White Road Boss, the cab over White Road Commander, and the Autocar DC, made for heavy-duty construction use.

Throughout the 1980s Volvo continued to develop and market both its own trucks and its acquired brands, then in 1988 it entered into a joint venture with General Motors Corp., forming the Volvo GM Heavy Truck Corporation. The new line of trucks was badged White GMC, and these were sold along with the existing Autocar line. This venture was short-lived however, as Volvo purchased all of GM’s interest in 1997, and the company was renamed Volvo Trucks North America. White GMC trucks were rebadged as Volvos or Autocars, and then in 2000 the name Autocar was retired, with Volvo eventually selling the trademark to GVW (Grand Vehicle Works) LLC.

Volvo trucks have always been made to be tough and durable, from the very first models designed to deal with the poor Swedish roads of the 1920s and the often harsh Swedish climate. Innovation is often born from the need to conquer problems like weather and roadway conditions and this has been true of Volvo. When more engine power was needed Volvo became one of the first manufacturers to install turbochargers, increasing the horsepower of the Titan truck from 150 to 185 in 1954. This spirit of innovation continues today. Already the leader in truck safety, Volvo has developed 2 important safety advances in collaboration with Bendix: VEST (Volvo Enhanced Stability Technology) automatically applies the necessary wheel brakes and reduces engine torque when dangerous driving situations are detected, and VEC (Volvo Enhanced Cruise) helps avoid collisions by using the engine and brakes to slow the truck and maintain a safe following distance.

The current lineup of Volvo trucks has the power, ruggedness and durability to get the job done today and many years into the future, with the efficiency and economy to save money in the process. Advanced aerodynamics combine with Volvo’s XE (eXceptional Efficiency) packages to provide maximum efficiency. With XE all the elements of the powertrain - engine, transmission, rear axle ratio and tire size – work in harmony to keep the engine in the right gear, optimize shifts, and reduce RPM at cruise. So, no matter whether it’s a proven Volvo VNM or VHD Series truck for short hauls, a premium VNL Series with a sleeper for long hauls, or a rugged VNX Series truck for the most demanding, heavy hauling tasks, there’s a Volvo truck that’s a perfect fit for the job.
