While other truck makers try to crank out as many units of the same truck as possible on automated assembly lines, Western Star still custom builds their trucks by hand, each one built exactly to the customer’s specifications. It takes longer and costs more to make a truck that way, but the result is a truck that’s rugged and durable enough to handle any task today and for years to come.

Originally a division of the White Motor Company, the first Western Star trucks were built in 1967 in Kelowna, British Columbia and badged White Western Star. However, by the end of the following decade White had become insolvent and in 1981 most of its assets were purchased by Volvo AB. The Canadian assets, which included the Western Star truck line and nameplate as well as the manufacturing plant, were sold to Bow Valley Resource Services and NOVA Corp, both energy-related companies in Alberta, Canada. In the early 1980s, Terry Peabody, an Australian entrepreneur, obtained the rights to build and sell Western Star trucks in Australia, and in 1990, he bought the entire company. Western Star thrived under Peabody, and in 2000 he sold the company at a large profit to Daimler AG, the parent company of Freightliner and Sterling trucks. Shortly after the purchase, production was moved to Portland, Oregon, where it continues today.

Western Star’s approach to building trucks is very driver-centric, because they believe that the driver is the most valuable asset in the trucking industry. This method has resulted in trucks built with roomier cabins, improved visibility, and driver-friendly wrap-around dashboards. Their trucks have the largest door openings in the industry, making ingress and egress safer and easier. The larger cabin includes increased headroom, more space between the clutch pedal and sidewall to increase foot room, and more space between the seat and steering wheel. Double door seals ensure a quieter ride and more efficient HVAC. Spring pins thread directly into the spring bushings, for greater stability and better handling. Each of these features and many others combine to provide greater driver comfort and ease of operation.

The current range of Western Star trucks starts with the 4700, available with Cummins or Detroit Diesel engines, automatic or manual transmissions in a range of speeds, standard or all-wheel drive, set-back or set-forward axle and wheelbase up to 300”. The 4700 is a workaholic, ideal as a dump truck, cement mixer, plow or other vocational applications. The 4800 delivers heavy-duty performance in a small package, for more demanding applications, and features a powerful Detroit Diesel engine, automatic or manual transmission in a range of speeds, standard or all-wheel drive, set-back, set-forward or twin-steer axles, and wheelbase up to 448”. Built as a semi-tractor for the long haul, or a tough tow truck, tanker or dump body, the 4900 packs versatility with ruggedness and power. It’s available with a large selection of engines, transmissions, cabs and axle options, with standard and all-wheel drive.

When there are huge loads to move or dependable performance is needed under the most extreme operating conditions, nothing tops the Western Star 6900. It can haul over 500,000 lbs. when configured as a tractor or carry 80,000 lbs. as a dump truck. It’s available with a choice of powerful Detroit Diesel engines, manual or automatic transmissions, in twin-steer or extreme duty configuration. The newest and most fuel efficient Western Star is the 5700XE, a perfect blend of ruggedness and classic looks in a more aerodynamic, fuel saving package, with an integrated drivetrain designed to provide new levels of performance, economy and reliability. All Western Star trucks feature steel cabs, custom pierced and shot-peened frames, and aircraft-grade electrical connectors.
