International is the oldest and perhaps the most famous name in commercial mechanical machinery, with a history dating back to Cyrus McCormick and his 1831 invention of the horse-drawn mechanical reaper for harvesting crops. With his brother Leander, Cyrus formed the McCormick Harvesting Machine Company in 1847. McCormick further perfected his reaper in the ensuing decades, eventually producing a combined reaper and self-binder that both cut the wheat and bound it into sheaves. Aided by railroad distribution and McCormick’s pioneering business practices, the company flourished during the latter half of the 19th century. In 1902, the McCormick Company merged with the Deering Harvester Company and several other smaller agricultural equipment firms to create the International Harvester Company.

The familiar International Harvester emblem: lower case red “i” interposed between the uprights of a black “H”, was displayed on thousands of farm tractors, medium and heavy-duty trucks, buses, agricultural machinery and construction equipment during the first ¾ of the 20th century. Along with being a prolific manufacturer, IH was an innovator as well, introducing the first Power Take Off (PTO) in 1918, the wet cylinder sleeve in 1924, the 2-speed rear axle in 1928, and the first tandem axle, where power is sent to both rear axles, in 1934. Along the way IH became an international manufacturer, engaged in vertical integration whereby the company owned parts of its supply chain, continued to refine its Farmall line of tractors, developed agricultural equipment including a mechanical cotton picker, and expanded its truck lineup to include the classic LoadStar, the cab-over TranStar, and the severe-duty PayStar.

In 1986 financial difficulties forced IH to refocus its product line and concentrate on trucks, buses, and diesel engines. The agricultural machinery division was sold to Tenneco, Inc., including the IH logo and name, while construction equipment and other divisions were sold to various other entities. The remaining company was renamed Navistar, with the brand name “International” now used for its trucks and engines. Although the International line of trucks are Navistar’s core product, the company has diversified, acquiring bus body maker American Transportation Corporation (AmTran) in the early 1990s; becoming a defense supplier in 2003; purchasing MWM, the leading diesel engine manufacturer in South America, in 2005; and buying RV builder Monaco Coach in 2009 and Continental cement mixers in 2010.

Today International builds Class 4 through Class 8 trucks that meet the needs of customers around the globe. These products combine the toughness and durability that customers expect with forward thinking, cutting edge technology that’s right for the modern environment. Their aerodynamic design makes the International LoneStar and ProStar some of the most fuel efficient trucks on the market. The company was ahead of the curve when diesel fuel was reformulated, and actually worked with the EPA in supporting the reduction of sulfur content. International was the first truck and engine manufacturer to meet more stringent EPA standards for particulate matter and hydrocarbons. The company’s efforts to build world-class trucks while creating a cleaner world have been recognized with numerous honors and awards.

International packs 100 years of truck building experience into every truck they make, from the Class 4/5 leading TerraStar, to the ProStar, the best-selling Class 8 truck in North America. Introduced in 2010, the TerraStar was designed to be the ultimate commercial truck, tough and reliable with a powerful engine based on a lightweight, compacted graphite iron engine block, and more cab volume than the competition for greater driver comfort. The superior aerodynamics of the ProStar come by way of computer modeling, the wind tunnel, and real world testing. This analysis revealed that the ProStar’s combination of roof fairings, side extenders, and chassis skirts improved cumulative fuel efficiency by as much as 19.75%. The tremendous low end torque of the Cummins engine coupled with efficient rear axle ratios enable the ProStar to cruise at 150-300 fewer rpms, for a further improvement in fuel efficiency of up to 11%.
