The International ProStar is a Class 8 truck by Navistar International Corp. that broke cover in 2006. It was the first of the new wave of trucks engineered in response to more stringent emission standards. The original ProStar came equipped with a diesel-soot-trapping filter and was designed around fuel efficiency, featuring an aerodynamic exterior and a few fuel-saving technologies like an auxiliary power system, high-pressure common rail injection, etc. It was marketed as the “driver's truck,” offering quiet and ergonomic cabins to keep the operator comfortable and productive. And with its design optimized for ease of maintenance and lower cost of ownership, the ProStar became the mainstay of fleets. The truck was eventually discontinued in the U.S. and Canada in 2016, with the all-new International LT bound to take its place.

Back in 2006, the ProStar was built largely new from the ground up, save for some sheet metal parts carried over from the company's existing trucks. There was a wide range of Cummins and MaxxForce engine options offered, teamed with Eaton manual and automated transmissions. For reduced emissions, there was the advanced EGR system sending cooled exhaust back into the engine. Much effort went into reducing NVH levels, and the result was a rethought frame construction, refined suspension, and comprehensive cabin insulation. The front frame crossmember was a unique structure named the Mega Bracket. It had many additional functions like carrying the cooling system, serving as a structure for steering and suspension components to be mounted to, and even supporting hood hinges, tow hooks, and the swing-forward front bumper, which makes it easier to access the engine bay. The suspension was all-new, designed in-house to provide handling precision and ride comfort while being suited for different chassis configurations.

The new generation of Navistar's famous Class 8 truck debuted in 2010 under the International ProStar+ (Plus) name. The new truck lost roughly 1,300 pounds of curb weight compared to the previous model and gained a few aerodynamic and interior improvements. On the outside, on-highway Day Cab trucks got a new roof fairing, while sleepers could be had with full-length chassis skirts. The overhead console was remodeled for easier reach. Interior storage capacity was improved (the Hi-Rise configuration was claimed to gain a 50% increase in storage in total), while the cabin became quieter by 9%. Driving was made easier thanks to a 20-pound force reduction in clutch feel. Power for the new-gen ProStar came from MaxxForce 11 and MaxxForce 13 engines fitted with EGR which, however, proved problematic and required Navistar to address the issue. The later models featured either a Cummins X15 or a Navistar N13 engine. With its 400 – 605 hp and 2050 lb-ft of torque, the Cummins ISX15 inline 6-cylinder diesel is a popular choice for heavy hauls. The 12.4-liter Navistar N13 provides 390 – 475 hp and up to 1700 lb-ft of torque, which are the specs comparable to those of higher-displacement engines. Backing the power up are manual transmissions by Eaton and Tremec or a 10-speed automatic by Allison.

The International ProStar has many features aimed at easier serviceability and increased uptime, starting with removable fuel lines that ease access to valve covers up to the advanced Diamond Logic that integrates the truck's systems and allows them to communicate seamlessly in order to optimize the rig's performance, manage the load on electrical equipment, simplify diagnostics, etc. The International ProStar is available in multiple configurations for local delivery, long haul, heavy haul, and tanker applications. Regardless of the model, the ProStar is a driver-friendly truck. Available in Deluxe, Premium, and Eagle interior trim levels, it offers plenty of amenities and conveniences to keep the driver comfortable and, in the case with sleepers, well-rested. Sleeper cabs have an optional upper bunk and provide ample storage for anything that the driver may ever need, plus additional space for a fridge and wardrobe. There are 56- and 73-inch sleeper length options combined with low, high, and skyrise sleeper configurations.
