Kenworth is one of the most revered names in medium and heavy-duty trucks. The company earned this respect with its commitment to quality and spirit of innovation spanning over 90 years and a number of industry firsts. In 1914, the Gerlinger Motor Car Works, the forerunner of the company that would become Kenworth, built the first commercial truck with a 6-cylinder engine. In 1933, Kenworth became the first American truck manufacturer to install diesel engines as standard equipment, and in 1985 Kenworth again led the way with the sleek, slope-nosed T600A, a truck that was 40% more aerodynamic than a conventional truck and used up to 22% less fuel. Throughout its history Kenworth has been guided by a single vision: building the world’s best.

Today Kenworth combines the latest in component technology with a tradition of craftsmanship and engineering excellence to create an industry-leading line of Class 5 through Class 8 medium-duty and heavy-duty trucks. And no matter whether you need a dump truck, tanker, concrete mixer, fire truck, or over-the-road tractor, when you go with Kenworth you can count on getting a truck that’s configured exactly to your needs. The company has a long history of dedication to custom built trucks, including a 6-wheel drive heavy-duty M1 wrecker equipped with cranes and winches to recover tanks during WWII; specially designed trucks to haul sugar cane from Hawaiian plantations; and the model 853, which was created in 1947 for the Arabian-American Oil Company (ARAMCO) for use in building the Trans-Arabian Pipeline.

The Gerlinger Motor Car Works was purchased by Edgar K. Worthington and Captain Frederick Kent in 1917 and renamed the Gersix Motor Co. The company was reincorporated in 1923 as the Kenworth Motor Truck Company. The name Kenworth was created out of the partners’ surnames, Kent and Worthington. Along with trucks, Kenworth was a prominent manufacturer of buses for school districts and transit systems through the 1950s. Thanks to diesel engines, trucks could be driven much further over longer routes, requiring drivers to make rest stops during the journey. So drivers wouldn’t have to search for a place to sleep when they were tired, Kenworth built the first integrated sleeper cab in 1933.

In 1945, Kenworth was purchased by the Pacific Car and Foundry Company (PACCAR), which built railway and logging equipment. In addition to Kenworth, today PACCAR is also the parent company of Peterbilt and DAF trucks. Under PACCAR’s stewardship, Kenworth has become an international brand, building trucks in Mexico and Australia, and received recognition for customer satisfaction, industry innovation, and manufacturing excellence through numerous J.D. Power Customer Satisfaction Awards, prestigious EPA Clean Air Excellence and Industry Innovation Awards, and many other honors. The one-millionth Kenworth, an aerodynamic T680 Advantage, was built at the company’s Chillicothe, Ohio assembly plant on November 21, 2014.

From maneuverable cab-over delivery trucks like the K270 and K370, and workhorse medium-duty trucks like the T170/T270/T370, to off-road ready haulers like the C500, and the most aerodynamic long haul tractors like the T680, Kenworth has a truck for every need and purpose. Each truck is built rugged and reliable to do the job day in and day out for many years, but also designed for economy, serviceability, and driving comfort. The PACCAR range of in-line 6-cylinder engines are responsive at low RPMs and optimized for fuel efficiency, while meeting all EPA emissions requirements. Many trucks have state-of-the-art features like Adaptive Cruise Control to reduce collisions, Predictive Cruise Control to maximize fuel economy, and sophisticated navigation and diagnostic systems.
